Heisman Trophy: 5 Dark horse candidates to watch in 2018
Every year it seems there is one defensive player who enters – at least for a while – into the Heisman discussion. Truthfully, Ed Oliver should have been more highly considered in 2017.
Oliver not only has the disadvantage of playing on the wrong side of the ball when it comes to the minds of Heisman voters, but he also plays in a Group of Five conference, making his odds even longer.
However, Ed Oliver is no ordinary defensive tackle, and everyone with a Heisman vote should be watching him from start to finish this season. Despite his 290-pound frame, the 2017 Outland Trophy winner moves along the line with all the spryness of linebacker and hits with the speed and ferocity of a free safety.
If you are unsure about Oliver belonging in the Heisman discussion, just check out the highlights of he and his Houston teammates making life miserable for Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson last season.
This could be the year we see a defensive player lift the Heisman over his head, and Ed Oliver can be the man to do it.
