For the sixth year in a row, the Cyclones open up the season with a team from the FCS Missouri Valley conference. Iowa State is 2-3 in the previous five meetings against FCS teams which is inexcusable for a Big 12 team. Good thing these Cyclones are not the Cyclones of the past, Iowa State will win their opening game and head into the Cy-Hawk rivalry with some momentum.

Iowa State’s 1-3 over the past four years against the Hawkeyes with the only win coming at Iowa in 2014 (20-17). A crazy game took place last year that resulted in the Cyclones losing 44-41 in OT but this year should be the year when the Cyclones get their revenge.

With Oklahoma and Akron on deck, it is likely the Cyclones to go into the heart of Big 12 play 3-1. The rest of the schedule is a mix of good and bad. Tough road games at TCU and Oklahoma State will test the Cyclones but be followed by four very winnable games. A road trip to Texas and a home game against Kansas State wrap up the regular season and quite frankly Iowa State has struggled against both recently. Many would consider it a win to get the home win against Kansas State. But let’s face it, Texas will be much better under Tom Herman in year two

Prediction: 8-3 (5-3)

Iowa State will follow up a great second season under Matt Campbell with an even better third. This will finally be the season the Cyclones finish in the fourth quarter and end November with momentum with wins against Kansas, Baylor and Kansas State. Iowa State football is not the program it once was, Matt Campbell has the momentum building and it is nowhere near slowing down.
