I’ll hand this to Houston: while other schools have attempted to intersperse other colors in their base uniforms, the Cougars have doubled down on red… and then tripled down, and then quadrupled down. Houston would like there to be absolutely no mistake what their predominant color is, thank you very much.

It’s not exactly an aesthetically pleasing red, either. That’s traffic-light red, the sort of red that screams at you repeatedly to notice it, not unlike what many Houston fans do on social media.

I will award Houston some bonus points for their helmets, which are some of the best in the league. When you toss in black or white pants, it actually becomes a pretty decent look. Their all-black alternates are solid, if a bit unexciting.

But far too much of the time, the Cougars seem content to look like candy canes. Very endearing candy canes, but candy canes nonetheless.
