1. Bill Walsh College Football ’95

I realize it’s total hypocrisy to choose my number one game as the one without a dynasty mode, or auto-motion, or all of the teams in college football. However, this game was played to death in my household and still is. Something about Bill Walsh ’95 holds up over time and is still fun to play with friends or even to play out a season on your own. The game was labeled ’95, released in 1994, and featured rosters from 1993 if you can take all of that in. The game had 36 teams and was finally licensed so “Ann Arbor” could be Michigan.

This is the first college football game with a season mode instead of just a tournament and the game kept your stats on the season which was amazing. You can now turn on and off the old Madden and Bill Walsh 1.0 ‘passing windows’ which I never liked and see the actual field and open receivers in front of you. This is a SEGA release and the graphics don’t feel upgrade from the original Walsh game but there are expanded playbooks on both offense and defense.

Where the game lacks a dynasty mode and recruiting the nostalgia holds up as you can play as Kordell Stewart, Tommie Frazier, or Warren Sapp– even if they’re not built in by actual name. It’s not quite the repeat playability of the classic Tecmo Super Bowl for NES but for SEGA this is their most re-play worthy title in the football genre.

If you haven’t broken out your SEGA and Bill Walsh ’95 from the garage you really should and let your kids see what the old days were like- they were simpler but better times.
