Penn State Football: 5 Reasons Trace McSorley will win Heisman in 2018
4. The Baker Mayfield Effect
Although no two players are the same, similarities and traits are a good sign of what can be expected. (Insert the not-so-popular eye test.) The 2017 Heisman Trophy Winner and No. 1 overall pick, Baker Mayfield, is a prime example of who Trace McSorley could resemble in 2018.
Both are criticized for their lack of size in the pocket, yet they both still deliver where others can’t, play with a passion, and know when to take over the game. Not saying Trace McSorley is a future number one draft pick, but his game mirrors very much of Baker Mayfield’s.
One of the biggest determinations of this eye test is their ability to throw on the move. When rolling out of or stepping up in the pocket both McSorley and Mayfield know how to find their targets and deliver a strike downfield.
When you look at career numbers, Mayfield has the edge in almost every category. Sure, you could argue their career numbers don’t match up, but McSorley plays in a more dominant conference top-to-bottom, especially in terms of the defensive side of the ball. No credit should be taken away from Baker Mayfield but more should be given to Trace McSorley.
