The schedule is not friendly for a team that’s rebuilding. The non-conference games should all be wins, but Big Ten play is just brutal for Nebraska this year. Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State all feel like losses. Having to play all of those games except for Michigan State in the road adds insult to injury.
Outside of those four games, and the three to start the season, a lot of this schedule is a coin flip. The Huskers should beat Illinois, and probably Minnesota. However, I think that’s all they’re getting in conference play.
Prediction: 5-7
I see five games on this schedule that Nebraska should win. I think they’ll get those games done, but I just don’t see them pulling off any upsets. Iowa, Purdue and Northwestern will be toss ups, but Purdue is the only one that’ll be played at home.
If they can flip those games, it’ll be an extremely impressive first year for Frost. However, with a new quarterback, no steady running back, and a patchwork defense, I just don’t see it.
Next: 5 breakout freshman for Nebraska in 2018
This is not a year designed for Nebraska to win. They’re not to that point yet under Frost. This is a setup season, and should be treated as such. The breakout year for Nebraska should be either next year or 2020, and I’m leaning towards the latter. That’s perfectly fine. Patience is key.
