Last Chance U: What happened to linebacker Bobby Bruce?

ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MARCH 23: The Netflix App logo is seen on a television screen on March 23, 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey. The Government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan passed a new law on March 22 extending the reach of the country's radio and TV censor to the internet. The new law will allow RTUK, the states media watchdog, to monitor online broadcasts and block content of social media sites and streaming services including Netflix and YouTube. Turkey already bans many websites including Wikipedia, which has been blocked for more than a year. The move came a day after private media company Dogan Media Company announced it would sell to pro-government conglomerate Demiroren Holding AS. The Dogan news group was the only remaining news outlet not to be under government control, the sale, which includes assets in CNN Turk and Hurriyet Newspaper completes the governments control of the Turkish media. An interesting story ended badly for Bobby Bruce, a freshman outside linebacker at Independence C.C., following the end of Season 3 of “Last Chance U“.

“Last Chance U” took the focus of its third installment to Independence Community College located in Independence, KS. One of the Independence players that got a bigger spotlight in Part 3 was linebacker Bobby Bruce.

On a roster chalked full of former FBS talent and players that would eventually sign with Power Five schools when it was all said and done, Bruce somewhat fell through the cracks among that bunch.

The Titusville, FL product had a tragic story from his upbringing which was highlighted throughout the show. He had to fight through adversity just to get his career to Independence. Yet, the raw talent and grit shines through at points throughout the series and in his limited playing time on defense in the 2017 season.

He struggled to stay on the field and earn the trust of the coaching staff for most of the regular season. Bruce showed the potential of being a rangy and hard-hitting linebacker when he did make his way on the field, and from his highlights.

Independence finished the 2017 campaign with a record of 9-2 and a top 10 ranking. Bruce could’ve returned for the upcoming season on another talented roster and with a chance to take his college career to the FBS for 2019 and beyond. The turnout has been vastly different so far.

According to 247Sports and the ending credits from Part 3 of “Last Chance U”, Bruce was arrested during the summer and is not expected to return to Independence for the 2018 season. Yet, a recent Tweet from a former head football coach of Bruce’s in Matt Diesel claimed that he would be back at Independence to finish out his career.

That tweet was also retweeted by Bruce on his timeline. If this proves true, Bruce could get his career back on track soon. Yet, there are no other big rumors that have come out of the works. Since this tweet is so recent (within the past 24 hours as of July 24), we’ll watch for any news to come about in the coming days and weeks.

Next: Where could "Last Chance U's" Malik Henry fit in?

If Bruce gets his career back on track, he could get some looks from some smaller schools at least to start. He didn’t get any offers from the past recruiting cycle. Last season, Bruce racked up 24 tackles and one tackle for loss.
