Competition he’d face

We’ve already mentioned the steep competition that Jurkovec would face with Notre Dame in 2018. He should have the upper hand at winning the starting job in 2019 if he has some nice performances in whatever playing time he does get this fall.

Jurkovec would have to show more than Book did in the limited playing time he got last year in which he tossed the same number of touchdowns as he did interceptions. And, if both Book and Wimbush have similar struggles to what they saw last season, Kelly is likely to give Jurkovec the start at some point this year.

With Wimbush as the likely victor of the quarterback competition to start the 2018 campaign, Jurkovec would be facing an uphill battle from the word go. This opening week matchup that Notre Dame has on tap with the Michigan Wolverines is huge for the outcome of the entire 2018 season.

Notre Dame also has an incoming 2019 quarterback in three-star pro-style Virginia native Brendon Clark. Kelly would be wise to continually bring in quarterback talent to keep the depth strong in that room and also challenge Jurkovec regularly. Clark is a lower rated high school prospect than Jurkovec, though.
