The Longhorn Defense

The primary reason the Texas Longhorns didn’t collapse last season was their defense. In 2017, the Texas defense finished second in the Big 12 in yards allowed per game and led the nation in defensive touchdowns. But their backbone of success from last season could be their cause of concern heading into 2018. T

he Longhorns enter this season with the leaders from all three lines of defense in 2017 went to the NFL. But not all is lost. As mentioned before, the Longhorns finished with one of the top recruiting classes of 2018. A special contributing factor to their success was signing top talent at both the safety and cornerback position.

In addition to their recruitment, the Longhorns return Charles Omenihu and Breckyn Hager on the defensive line (whom both led the team in sacks in 2017 with four apiece), as well as defensive back Brandon Jones and linebacker Gary Johnson, the returning leaders in tackles from last season.

Although there are some major holes to fill along the defense, the Longhorns have the talent to replace those voids. Expect a shortage in defensive touchdowns but the defense should hold steady along the way in 2018.
