The day before camp started, the Michigan State football coaches hosted many of their top recruiting targets across various classes.

The state of Michigan has had a bit of a resurgence in producing some of the top football talent the last couple of years. The 2019 class is one of the strongest and deepest classes I’ve seen in a long time for the state, the early buzz around the state is that 2020 could rival it.

That’s good news for the Michigan State coaches who have prided themselves on finding and landing many of the best players the state has produced since coach Dantonio arrived.

On July 31, the coaches hosted many of the top instate players in the 2020 class. I was able to talk to some of the players in attendance and get their reactions from the visit, and their thoughts on the Michigan State football program and coaches. Many resonated the same message, about how they love the coaches.

A couple offers were handed out to in-state wide receivers while on campus.

Ian Stewart, WR, Gibraltar (Mich.)

Ian Stewart a 6-foot-3, 200-pound receiver from Gibraltar, Mich., was the first to announce on Twitter that he received an offer from the Spartans. He came up with his grandfather and girlfriend and although he had to leave early for a doctor’s appointment, he was still able to interact with coaches and get an offer he has coveted from head coach Mark Dantonio in person.

I was able to catch up with Stewart to get his thoughts on the Michigan State offer and his thoughts on the coaches and program. On what the offer meant to him, “man it means a lot. For the staff to believe in me enough to extend me a scholarship makes you excited, but also hungry. Makes you want to work even harder because you see the hard work you put in pay off ”

On what sticks out to Stewart about Michigan State football program. “The coaching staff is what stands out the most to me. They’ve been together for so long, and know how to work together and win games. Coach D and his staff do a great job.” On what coach Dantonio told Stewart he liked about him. “Coach D offered me early in our conversation. He said they like my size, and how I play aggressive, and my ball skills.”

I talked to him about his thoughts on the 2019 instate commits and if any of them have already started recruiting him. “I’ve known Tre (Mosley) for a little bit now, I was talking to him about what stood out. He told me it came down to Michigan and MSU, and the coaching staff at MSU is what did it for him.” Asking about fellow 2020 wide receiver Devell Washington who also received an offer Tuesday and if they have talked about playing together, Stewart said “yeah we’re pretty close, and have talked about it a little bit.”
