FAU Football: 5-step roadmap for how Devin Singletary wins the 2018 Heisman Trophy
By Zach Bigalke
5. Singletary needs to increase his role in the passing game
Last year, Singletary actually caught seven fewer passes in 14 games as a sophomore than he did in 12 games as a freshman in 2016. Singletary did, however, make those catches count. Despite hauling averaging nearly one fewer reception per game, Singletary finished the year with 35 more receiving yards.
That was all good and well, but for Singletary to have a shot at the Heisman Trophy in 2018 he will need to get even more involved with the passing game. He doesn’t necessarily need to haul in the 54 passes that Saquon Barkley snagged in 2017 to boost his credentials. At the very least, though, he does need to become more frequently targeted.
If he can add 300 to 400 receiving yards to what should be another strong rushing year, Singletary will sit among the leaders in the nation in all-purpose yards. That is critical to building his Heisman case this year.
To do that, he will need to haul in 25 to 30 catches this season. Even if he just maintains his per-catch averages from last season, Singletary will be an attractive dark-horse candidate on Heisman ballots if he can catch two to three passes per game this year and show himself off as a dual-threat star out of the backfield.
