Defensive Line

Starting tackles: Kevin Givens, Robert Windsor
Backups: Antonio Shelton, Fred Hansard, Ellison Jordan

At the tackle position, the Nittany Lions lost both starters in Curtis Cothran and Parker Cothren. Defensive line coach Sean Spencer likes to rotate as many guys as possible so there is still plenty of experience. Both Kevin Givens and Robert Windsor appeared in every game last season, logging a combined 42 tackles and five and half sacks. Givens and Windsor are sure to take advantage of the increased reps this season.

Redshirt sophomore Antonio Shelton got into the rotation last year and should see more reps as a backup this season. Redshirt freshman Fred Hansard is ready to contribute during his debut, but keep an eye on Ellison Jordan. The redshirt sophomore played in seven games last year before suffering from a broken kneecap. Depending on his health, he could see a lot of reps.

Starting ends: Shareef MillerShaka Toney
Backups: Yetur Gross-MatosShane Simmons

Until very recently, the defensive line had some of the most depth out of any position for the Lions. The depth will now be tested as a result of both Ryan Buchholz and Torrence Brown announcing their decisions to retire due to medical concerns. The good news is Shareef Miller returns with his team-leading five sacks and 11 tackles for loss last season. Miller looks ready to take his game to the next level.

The other end spot is now more unsettled. Shaka Toney appears to have the edge, but certainly expect Yetur Gross-Matos and Shane Simmons to get reps. Simmons’ health is in question since recently appearing with a walking boot. If the injuries continue to pile up, true freshman Jayson Oweh might need to play early.
