Defensive Back

Starting cornerbacks: Amani OruwariyeJohn Reid
Backups: Tariq Castro-Fields, Zech McPhearson

The Lions need to replace their entire starting secondary, but there is plenty of experience returning. John Reid returns after missing the entire 2017 campaign to an ACL injury. He led the team in pass breakups with nine during 2016 so his experience will be a huge help. On the other side, Amani Oruwariye steps into a starting role after leading the team with four interceptions a year ago.

Both Tariq Castro-Fields and Zech McPhearson look to increase their reps this year. Castro-Fields especially appears to be a rising star, potentially even pushing for starting reps.

Starting safeties: Nick ScottAyron Monroe
Backups: Garrett Taylor, Lamont Wade

Safety was another position of question for the Lions, but it appears now they have some answers. Nick Scott and Ayron Monroe are ready to fill the void after waiting for their opportunity over the past couple seasons. Scott is well respected within the locker room and was named one of the team captains for the upcoming campaign.

The team moved true sophomore Lamont Wade from cornerback to safety where he should push for more reps. Garrett Taylor has also waited for his chance and should take full advantage.
