1. Penn State will be a top-five team

Penn State starts off the season ranked No. 10 in the AP Top 25 and with a 5-0 start that included a win over conference rival, Ohio State, the Nittany Lions will be ranked in the top 5 of the AP Poll by the end of the month.

This is huge for a team that, one, has a lot of doubters, and two, has a tough road ahead of them with at least three more games versus ranked opponents (Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin). Breaching into the top-five could allow one loss to occur later in the season but still keep their playoffs hopes alive.

Although it is a different ranking, the AP Poll matters just as much as it doesn’t when it comes to the playoff rankings.

September is an important month for all teams. Getting off to great start and smoothing out the kinks to your game plan are crucial leading into the heart of the season. And for a team ready to prove themselves, like Penn State, September could be the most important month. The phrase “It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish” is not one that sticks when it comes to college football. One loss can end any hopes to a playoff berth.
