The last game of an action-packed Week 1 occurs on Monday night as Florida State welcomes Virginia Tech to Doak Campbell Stadium. The Seminoles are 7.5 point favorites.
Florida State has a new coach in Willie Taggart and Tallahassee is buzzing with excitement around the new era. While competing for a national championship in his first year is a little far-fetched, there is a ton of talent on this team. It is Florida State after all and despite bolting for Texas A&M, Jimbo Fisher did not leave the Seminoles depleted. A year ago the Seminoles should have been in the playoff chase but fizzled after an opening week loss to Alabama.
Virginia Tech seems like the forgotten team in the ACC. Clemson has been crowned champion before a down has been played, Miami is on the rise, and of course, Florida State has the start of a new era. Where do the Hokies fit in the mix? Quietly they are ready to compete with the other three teams. The Hokie defense should be one of the best in the country.
Speaking of the Hokie defense, they should bust up the Seminole offensive line which was porous a year ago. If the Hokie’s can shut down the Florida State rushing attack, it could make for an interesting night. Expect a low scoring affair and a possible statement from Virginia Tech that maybe they should not have been overlooked.
