UCF Football: 3 takeaways from Knights’ blowout win over UConn
1. Football can be a sobering sport
UCF cornerback Aaron Robinson was carted off the field on a stretcher from a tackle on the opening kickoff. Robinson is a transfer student from the University of Alabama, where he played in all 13 games as a true freshman.
Last year, Robinson had to sit out the season due to the NCAA rules on transfer students. This year, he has been competing for a starting position in the UCF secondary. Now, his season, and football career is in jeopardy.
As fans of the game, we often take for granted the fact that incredibly large and strong men run down the field, at speeds upwards of 15-20 miles per hour, towards each other with little to no regard for their own safety.
But in college football, the players are very young men, with their entire lives ahead of them. On any given play, a player can damage nerves in their neck or back, leaving them paralyzed for the rest of their life. And at the moment, these college players are not even being paid.
UCF coaches have reported that they believe Aaron Robinson will be okay. How “OK” is still unknown. Robinson gave a thumbs up on his way out on the stretcher and was able to move his feet, suggesting he had feeling in both his upper and lower extremities.
Football is a beautiful, exhilarating sport. The guys on the field play for the competition and love of the game. We watch the sport for similar reasons. However, we are able to experience the joys and heartbreak of the game without risk of physical harm. So, let us show gratitude and appreciation for the players who give everything for our entertainment.
