4. New stars emerge

Ole Miss might be at the hellmouth of controversy but a new star emerged in Oxford in Scottie Phillips. The junior tailback ran for 200 yards in his debut averaging 12.8 yards per carry and scoring two touchdowns against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Phillips is a transfer from Jones County Junior College and made Rebels fans forget about their plight for an afternoon.

Dwayne Haskins helped OSU fans forget about their own controversy after throwing for 313 yards and five touchdowns in his starting debut. Haskins and the Buckeyes slaughtered the Oregon State Beavers 77-31 but the competition level is going to pickup once the Buckeyes play the TCU Horned Frogs in Week 3.

It’s not like he’s a new name, we’ve heard a ton about Kyler Murray over the years but he came out like a guy focused on football on September 1st. Murray threw for 209 yards and two scores averaging 19 yards per attempt. Yes, 19 yards per passing attempt as he tossed only 11 passes while derailing the Lane Train in Norman.

Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald actually broke out in week zero against the Colorado State Rams but he’s on fire again in week one. In two games, McDonald has throw for over 800 combined yards and tossed nine touchdowns to no interceptions. The dual-threat passer has also ran for three touchdowns averaging 6.3 yards per carry for the Warriors.
