3. The Irish defense has all the confidence in the world

With all of the pre-game talk about Michigan’s defensive line, Notre Dame’s defense had to be satisfied with their performance. Given the fact that quarterback Shea Patterson was making his first start for the program, the Wolverine offense was somewhat of a wildcard. However, the Irish defense was able to contain him, allowing only one touchdown over the course of the evening.

Defensive mainstays such as Drue Tranquill and Te’von Coney impressed once again, but the most encouraging sign was how well some of the new additions functioned in their increased roles. Junior Khalid Kareem recorded nine total tackles and was often involved in disrupting Michigan’s backfield. Junior Julian Okwara also added an interception during his timeshare with Daelin Hayes.

Former Navy transfer Alohi Gilman was all over the field Saturday, recording seven total tackles and two passes defensed. The Irish also received some clarity in other areas as senior Asmar Bilal impressed at rover and Coleman was able to make the successful transition from safety to nickelback.

All things considered, Notre Dame is in a great place to make some noise as a defense this season. Defensive coordinator Clark Lea has made it a point to keep last year’s schemes in place, but it seems as if his unit has taken a step forward opposed to a step back in the wake of Mike Elko’s departure. Look for the Notre Dame defense to have a huge day against this Ball State offense.
