Memphis Football: Turnovers spell defeat for Tigers vs. Navy
3. It’s Hard to Win With Five Turnovers
Memphis didn’t have the best day protecting the ball. They began the game with a fumble on the first drive, followed it up two drives later with yet another fumble, then threw an interception, a fumble in the second half cut their lead to five, and they turned the ball over on downs to end the game.
If Memphis takes anything out of this game, they need to protect the ball going forward. The offense does seem more ground-based in 2018 due to the roster turnover at quarterback and wide receiver positions. In 2017, Memphis lost a total of six fumbles for the entire season which was top-20 amongst all FBS-teams. This season they have played two games and now have half of their 13 game total in a matter of two games.
Brady White’s interception was a bit flukey in the first half with the Hail Mary interception, a very low percentage past for the best of quarterbacks. Taking the sack was the game killer for the Tigers and next time they need to work better on developing a game plan for that situation. There are no excuses for taking a sack on fourth down when the game is on the line, you have to, have to, have to atleast try to make something happen.
