TCU Football: SMU gives Frogs a scare in battle for Iron Skillet
2. Don’t kick it to KaVontae Turpin
Nothing went right for TCU early in this game. SMU quarterback Ben Hicks lost his helmet after a first down run, forcing him to leave the game for one play. His backup William Brown came in, presumably to hand the ball off before Hicks could return on the next play.
TCU knew it was going to be a handoff. SMU knew it. The entirety of the mostly damp onlookers knew what was going to happen. Then they all watched Braeden West take the ball 51-yards for the first touchdown of the game.
The Horned Frogs’ woes continued. A botched punt turned into a safety before a long field goal dinked off the uprights. No matter what they did, nothing seemed to work.
Then SMU kicked it to do-it-all playmaker KaVontae Turpin:
Turpin did the rest. The 78-yard score put the Horned Frogs back within one score and broke the illusion that SMU was going to get all the favorable bounces. There was no reason to kick it to a player that could change the complexion of the game with one play. SMU learned that the hard way.
