Big 12 Football 2018: Pokes make push for top spot
I expected Oklahoma State to be pretty solid this season. Mike Gundy is a good coach, and they’re usually able to get at least nine wins every year, and I expected something similar this year, despite the questions at quarterback. However, this past Saturday, they completely blew me away. Against an awesome Boise State team, Oklahoma State played a complete, and excellent game on the way to a 44-21 win.
The offense was great against a good defense, and while Taylor Cornelius still doesn’t wow me, he looks like he can do what is needed of him. Justice Hill was great as per usual. The true stars of this game, however, were on Oklahoma State’s defense. They showed what the Jim Knowles defense will look like, and it was honestly a little intimidating. They gave Boise State trouble all day, and if this Oklahoma State team can be consistent on defense, they may be a serious threat in this conference.
I don’t have a ton to say about Oklahoma here. They got a good scare from Iowa State, but withstood the test well, and did what they needed to, keeping their record spotless. Kyler Murray confirmed his status as a dude, both in the air and on the ground, as did receiver Hollywood Brown, who is just unfair in the open field.
The running attack wasn’t great in the first week without Rodney Anderson, but I’m not too worried about it. Mike Stoops is still bad at his job, but we knew that, so it was already factored in. Oklahoma isn’t unbeatable, but they’re very good. I’m excited to see them play TCU in about a month.
