3. Wimbush combines for nearly 400 yards… again

While the Ball State matchup was inviting, this week’s matchup could be the one that turns things around for Wimbush. If you recall, last year’s meeting between these two programs resulted in a shootout, with the Irish eventually pulling away with a 48-37 win. While Notre Dame’s offense doesn’t look nearly as refined this season, there’s still some reason for optimism.

First, Wake Forest’s defense has put up some unimpressive numbers despite squaring off against the likes of Tulane, Towson, and Boston College, none of which are known as offensive powerhouses. Nevertheless, the Demon Deacons found themselves in yet another shootout against a Boston College team that had done the majority of its damage to UMass and Holy Cross.

Next, I believe that the talent is still there for Wimbush. Maybe not so much in the passing game, but such an instinctive runner as Wimbush shouldn’t be struggling to reach the 3.0 YPC mark. It’s possible that Wimbush could return to form against a familiar opponent that let up 390 total yards and three scores to him a season ago.

Lastly, as seen in last year’s matchup, Wake Forest plays at a particularly fast pace. With the Notre Dame defense seemingly improved from last year, Clark Lea‘s squad could make easy work of the Wake Forest defense, providing more opportunity for Wimbush and his offense. Should the Irish defense force a few three-and-outs, we’ll get to see how Wimbush operates with more time on his hands.
