2. Brandon Wimbush is going to cost them a game this season

Brandon Wimbush is a below-average college football quarterback. The elusive runner can’t win a game with his arm. When he tries, it usually ends up poorly. Head Coach Brian Kelly has refused to make the switch to Ian Book and he’s refused to scrap his offense in favor of one more conducive to a run-first signal caller. That’s left Wimbush with a tall task, and he’s failed repeatedly.

Here are Wimbush’s passing box scores from the first three games of the season:

  • vs Michigan: 12-of-22, 170 yards, one touchdown and one interception
  • vs Ball State: 17-of-31, 297 yard, zero touchdowns and three interceptions
  • vs Vanderbilt: 13-of-3, 122 yards, zero touchdowns and zero interceptions

All of those results were almost insufficient in their respective games and will prove to be equally unhelpful when the tougher tests come down the pipe. It’s hard to believe there’s an unquestioned FBS starter with a 1-to-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio, and that man is starting for Notre Dame, one of the most storied programs in the history of the sport.

If Notre Dame falls behind, why would anyone have faith that Wimbush has what it takes to march back and win? He’s not a great quarterback under normal situations, and pressure to his concentration and he could collapse in epic Sportscenter Not-Top-10 fashion.
