4. Wake Forest can score

The best offense Notre Dame has faced so far this season was the Michigan offense in their season opener. That’s right, the same Michigan offense that was maligned for its lackluster performance against the Irish. After stuffing their stats against the likes of Western Michigan and SMU, the Wolverines have moved up to a respectable 37 points per game, with only 17 of those points coming against the talented Notre Dame defense.

The rest of Notre Dame’s foes haven’t fared much better. Ball State averages 22.7 points per game while Vanderbilt scores 31.0 points per game and Wake Forest averages 36.0 points per game. Notre Dame didn’t score any of those offenses by more than eight points, so it’s perfectly reasonable to peg Wake to come close to their season average of 36 points per game.

If Wake reaches 36 points they might be able to call the game. Notre Dame had some cobwebs to dust off in the season opener, but none of their performances to date, even against some subpar defenses has given fans any reason to be optimistic about the Irish offense as a whole. If the defense doesn’t come to play in a big way, the Demon Deacons will have the edge in this department, too.
