2. Scottie Phillips is the most underrated player on this team

Jones County Junior College product Scottie Phillips didn’t receive much attention when he transferred to Ole Miss during the offseason. A running back on a pass-heavy offense playing for a team that was projected to finish near the bottom of their conference, Phillips’ arrival didn’t move the needle from a national perspective. Phillips didn’t care.

In a few short weeks, Phillips has more than proved how important he’s going to be to this team. The soft-spoken tailback lets his play do the talking. He carried the ball 19 times against Kent State for 112 yards and one touchdown, adding two receptions for 44 yards. His 156 all-purpose yards were more than superstar receivers A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf. Not bad for a player that was playing JUCO ball at this point last season.

A 1,000-yard rusher in JUCO last season, Phillips is well on his way to eclipsing that mark in the toughest division in college football. Adding a player that explosive to an offense that has been one of the most prolific in the sport raises the production of everyone on the field. Whether he’s talked about much, he’s going to continue to make big plays for this team.
