Penn State fans have been anxiously awaiting for a big game from wide receiver Juwan Johnson this season. Against Illinois, Johnson finally showed up.

Johnson’s stats are not going to be a huge standout. He led the team in receptions on the night with four. He had 51 yards and a touchdown, his second of his career.

Johnson did not have a dominant performance, but Penn State fans can relax a little bit after he finally got involved in the offense after being quiet for the first three weeks. Quarterback Trace McSorley found Johnson on the first play of the game with a six-yard pass, trying to establish a rhythm with the redshirt junior early.

His touchdown catch came early in the fourth quarter, giving some breathing room to the Lions who only had a four-point lead up to that point. The catch was very reminiscent of his first career touchdown on the last play of the game at Iowa last season.

We have seen the emergence of KJ Hamler and the steady hands of DeAndre Thompkins over the last few weeks. It is now time for Johnson to show he can be a dominant receiver and take over a game. Perhaps this game will kick-start his break out.
