Penn State Football: 3 takeaways from roller-coaster win over Illinois

2. Penn State’s offense is prolific
There were some questions coming into the season how Penn State’s offense would operate under new offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne. After four games, the question has been answered in a resounding way.
Quarterback Trace McSorley went 12-for-19 for 160 yards and three touchdowns through the air. It is his 32nd consecutive game with a touchdown pass. He also carried the ball 15 times for 92 yards.
It was the Lion backfield that exploded. Miles Sanders had a career game, rushing for 200 yards and three touchdowns. With Mark Allen not making the trip due to injury, freshman Ricky Slade got extended playing time and made the most of it with 94 yards and two touchdowns. Even seldom used back Journey Brown found the endzone for a score. Nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns on the ground is something to feel good about moving forward.
The Nittany Lions had six second half possessions and scored touchdowns on all six drives. Efficient is a word coming to mind with this offense. The only thing stopping Penn State right now is themselves. Some penalties and a couple turnovers kept this game from being a bigger blowout in the end. If they can clean up the mistakes, this offense could be one of the best in college football.
