Group of Five Power Rankings, Week 4: I-4 rivals hold position at top
By Zach Bigalke
Houston already had a Power Five win on its record from taking down Arizona. That in no way mitigates the pain of losing to Texas Tech on the road in Week 3. But now that Texas Tech is ranked in the AP Top 25, the fact that Houston lost to the Red Raiders looks like less of a blemish on their record. The Cougars took their frustrations out from that loss on FCS Texas Southern this weekend, blowing out the Tigers by eight touchdowns on Saturday.

The Cougars defense gave up 278 combined yards through the air to Texas Southern quarterbacks Glen Cuiellette and Jay Christophe, but the pair needed 43 attempts to get there on a 44.1 percent completion rate. Houston’s front seven held the Tigers to 60 rushing yards on 27 attempts, more than half of those yards coming on a pair of 16-yard runs by Terio Brown and Brad Woodard.
On offense, the Cougars ran rampant at TDECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon. D’Eriq King threw for 200 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-25 passing. Then he ceded the spot under center to backup Clayton Tune, who added 186 yards and two scores on 12-of-23 passing. Four different runners punched in touchdowns on the ground as the Cougars rolled up the score.
They moved up a spot in the Group of Five Power Rankings this week less because of what they did on the field last weekend than because Akron lost above them. Either way, the Cougars will look to build up their spot after a bye week when they take on Tulsa to begin American Athletic Conference play on the first Thursday of October.
