Group of Five Power Rankings, Week 4: I-4 rivals hold position at top
By Zach Bigalke
San Diego State played one of five overtime games that transpired in Week 4, taking down Eastern Michigan 23-20 at home on Saturday to move to 3-1 in 2018. The close call against the MAC hopeful downgraded the Aztecs somewhat, as they fall behind the other one-loss Mountain West contenders coming off bye weeks.
Against Eastern Michigan, San Diego State’s Ryan Agnew threw for 176 yards on 12-of-22 passing with two touchdowns and a pick. The running game showed it has regressed a bit without Donnel Pumphrey or Rashaad Penny starring in the backfield. Juwan Washington took a backseat to Chase Jasmin, who finished with 94 yards on 16 carries.
San Diego State stifled the Eagles running attack when Eastern Michigan had the ball. The Aztecs gave up no carries longer than 10 yards, and they contained visiting quarterbacks Tyler Wiegers and Mike Glass III on a day where the pair combined for 236 yards on 17-of-27 passing.
What Rocky Long’s team has going in its favor is a takedown of Arizona State, and a three-game winning streak after falling 31-10 against top-10 Stanford in the opener. The Aztecs get their bye week on the last weekend of September, giving them time to prepare for the Mountain West opener at Boise State to start off October with a bang.
