Ben Batson was a part of one of the feel-good moments of the Clemson offseason. The former 2-star, dual-threat quarterback recruit didn’t receive any offers coming out of high school and opted to become a preferred walk-on at Clemson. His hard work during the offseason earned him a full scholarship, which was given to him by Dabo Swinney this summer.

Normally that’s where this heartwarming story would come to an end. Batson has free school and the Clemson quarterback got to celebrate his achievement with his teammates. Instead of returning to the scout team, Batson will now be forced to pick things up quickly with the first and second team offenses.

During his senior season at Dorman High school in South Carolina, Batson threw 13 touchdown passes and ran for 13 touchdowns on the ground. He generated just shy of 3,000 yards of total offense in 15 games with a few explosive plays sprinkled in here and there.

The 6-foot-1 quarterback could find himself playing sooner rather than later. In an ideal world, Swinney will try to steal him a few reps if Clemson finds a way to run the score up in one of their next few games. If it’s a non-emergency situation, Batson stands a better chance to be inserted rather than Renfrow.
