1. Notre Dame is as battle-tested as they come

It seems like every year is more of the same from Kelly and the Irish. One big win early in the season coupled with a few blowouts always seems to lead to a late-season collapse. This season has played out a little different though, with two keys wins over Michigan and Stanford paving the way for another top 25 matchup with No. 24 Virginia Tech.

As you may know, Kelly’s record in the first half of the season is significantly better than his record in the second half. When comparing his record against top 25 opponents in the first and second half, the disparity is even greater. Kelly has to know that this week’s top 25 matchup could be one of his last if he once again fails to get it done.

In regard to Virginia Tech’s schedule, they have taken down the one top 25 team they have faced in Florida State. However, the Seminoles have looked less and less like a top 25 team as the season has progressed. With their only other wins coming to William and Mary and Duke, a loss to Old Dominion was a telling one for the Hokies.

While the Notre Dame offense is on cloud nine following dominant performances over Wake Forest and Stanford, the Irish defense comes into this weekend with a few clutch performances under their belt. All things considered, an Irish loss here would be inexcusable.
