College Football’s 5th Quarter: 5 reasons Week 6 was awesome
3. Minor upsets are major fun
The Iowa State Cyclones knocked off the Oklahoma State Cowboys 48-42. ISU coach Matt Campbell has to be on the shortlist for any major openings around college football this off-season. His Cyclones have pulled off major upsets every year since his arrival and his offense put up huge numbers against the Cowboys.
Quarterback Brock Purdy averaged 13.8 yards per attempt and scored five total touchdowns in the epic win. Taylor Cornelius, the Cowboys quarterback, was really good too. Cornelius scored five touchdowns of his own.
The Northwestern Wildcats upset the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday. The Wildcats beat the Spartans 29-19 only a week after letting a 17 point lead slide against the Michigan Wolverines. Pat Fitzgerald had his defense working as usual. Northwestern’s defense had two sacks and six tackles for loss. They won the football game while only rushing for 0.4 yards per carry as a team.
Texas A&M closed out their upset this time with a 20-14 overtime win over Kentucky. The fast rising Wildcats were finally beaten by Jimbo Fisher’s Aggies. Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond threw two touchdowns and running back Trayveon Williams ran for 138 yards and scored on the ground. Kentucky’s offense struggled against the A&M defense that came away with six sacks and nine tackles for loss.
