4. Ian Book, Quarterback

There Ian Book sat, relegated to the backup quarterback job as Brandon Wimbush led Notre Dame to wins over Michigan, Ball State and Vanderbilt to start the year. But Book never grew tired, instead, he focused in on trying to impress Irish head coach Brian Kelly in practice.

When Kelly made the decision to remove Wimbush and go with Book in a game at Wake Forest last month, the junior answered, throwing for 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns, with three more trips to the end zone with his legs. He followed that performance up with four scores and 278 yards vs. Stanford, rushing for 90 yards combined in the two games.

Book didn’t have the same kind of luck vs. Virginia Tech this past Saturday, as he threw his first interception of the season in 105 attempts. He did, though, toss two more touchdowns and completed 25-of-35, as Notre Dame scored a convincing 45-23 victory.

For the season, Book now has 887 yards and nine passing touchdowns, adding three more scores on the ground.
