1. Georgia Tech hires Satterfield

Scott Satterfield has extremely strong ties to Boone, N.C., and Appalachian State.

Satterfield, the current Mountaineers’ head football coach, is from Hillsborough, N.C., and was the quarterback at Appalachian State during their FCS days in the early 1990s.

In 1998, App State hired the young football coach who worked with the quarterbacks, wide receivers and running backs at his alma mater before taking the quarterback coaching job at Toledo. His season at Toledo led to two years as the offensive coordinator at FIU before returning home to become the head coach of the Mountaineers.

Satterfield has done an impressive job of ushering the App State Mountaineers into the FBS level and Sun Belt. Under the head coach, App State has won two Sun Belt titles and three bowl games while being a double-digit game winner in 2015 and 2016. It’s difficult to recruit to Boone knowing that there is a limited chance at a major bowl game and obviously almost no chance at a national championship.

The Yellow Jackets administration seems ready to move on from Paul Johnson and his brand of the triple option. Johnson has compiled a 78-57 record in Atlanta but losing records in 2015 and 2017 put him on the hot seat. In 2018, the Jackets are 3-3 and have lost to Group of 5 South Florida and really bad Pittsburgh. If the Jackets want an easy transition Satterfield uses motion and triple option football in his modern veer offense.

Georgia Tech, Pitt and UNC upgrading their winning percentage, Miami with a recruiting coup and the ACC Network becoming a reality could be the five sparks the ACC needs to get back into the national conversation in 2019.
