Appalachian State Mountaineers. 10. team. 2391. . (3-1/SUN). Previous:

To be fair, Appalachian State has already won their Week 7 game against Arkansas State in resounding fashion. But even considering just their 3-1 record after the bye week in Week 6, the Mountaineers move up into the top 10 of the Group of Five hierarchy as one of the two key contenders in the Sun Belt race.

Appalachian State ranked in the top 15 in both offense and defense in just about every major category heading into their showdown against the Red Wolves. The Mountaineers ranked second in scoring offense and 15th in scoring defense. They rank 12th overall in yards gained and sixth in yards allowed. Through the first week of October, the Mountaineers were also the top-ranked team in kick return average and 17th in punt returns.

Beyond their season-opening loss by a single touchdown at Penn State, Appalachian State is otherwise dominating their competition. They jump up to No. 10 in this week’s power rankings even without the Red Wolves win.
