San Diego State jumped up a spot in the Group of Five Power Rankings thanks to a 19-13 defeat of Boise State in a defensive battle on the Smurf Turf at Albertsons Stadium. The Aztecs poached three interceptions off Boise State’s quarterbacks, and the Broncos were held to just 229 total yards of offense on their home field.

Ryan Agnew was a pedestrian 8-of-15 for 113 yards and suffered four sacks against the Boise State defensive front. But Chase Jasmin and Jordan Byrd combined for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, helping balance out the attack on a day when defense was dominant for both teams.

The season-opening loss against Stanford looks less forgivable as the Cardinal suffer through a skid. But Rocky Long’s squad still has one Power Five statement win against Arizona State, and they are sitting alongside Hawaii and Fresno State as undefeated contenders in the MWC West. San Diego State is home over the next two weeks to face Air Force and San Jose State.
