Clemson Football: 3 takeaways from convincing win over NC State
3. Trevor Lawrence is good
Trevor Lawrence hasn’t quite been Tua Tagovailoa as far as yards per passing attempt goes but the Tigers are also undefeated and he’s looked good since taking over the starting quarterback role at Clemson. Heading into Week 8, Lawrence was completing 69 percent of his passes while averaging 8.68 yards per attempt passing and has thrown 11 touchdowns and two interceptions in 2018.
A former five-star blue chip passer in the class of 2018, Lawrence was either rated the top player or second-best player in the country depending on the recruiting service. A four-touchdown performance against Georgia Tech was Lawrence’s best overall performance but his first 300-plus yard performance was against the Wolfpack in Week 8. He’s not going to be the weapon on the ground that Kelly Bryant was but he’s a much more efficient passer in the Tigers’ offense.
NC State kept Lawrence to just under eight yards per passing attempt and he threw only one touchdown but it was an all around performance from the Tigers. When a quarterback can guide an offense to convert on over 50 percent of their third-down conversions, he’s done a great job and that’s what Lawrence accomplished against the Wolfpack. Look for Lawrence to guide the Tigers through their schedule and into another ACC Championship Game.
