Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: C

One of the biggest problems with Penn State’s offense this season has been receivers dropping passes. The trend continued Saturday against the Hoosiers.

The veteran trio of Juwan Johnson, DeAndre Thompkins and Brandon Polk have failed to live up to expectations so far. Johnson to his credit did have a nice 59-yard catch and run that set up a field goal in the second quarter. However he did not return to the field after that and appeared to be injured. Polk had a sure touchdown pass slip right through his hands, a catch that would have kept Trace McSorley’s touchdown pass streak alive.

Outside of KJ Hamler, the receivers cannot seem to grasp the ball when it is most needed.  Probably one reason why young receivers Cam Sullivan-Brown and Jahan Dotson saw the field in the second half.

Tight end Pat Freiermuth caught two balls for 32 yards, with one being the touchdown from Tommy Stevens. None of the other tight ends made a catch. Freiermuth seems to be the most consistent of the Lions’ tight end rotation.
