Group of Five Power Rankings, Week 8: Another unbeaten falls
By Zach Bigalke
San Diego State still has just one loss on their record, as they fell 31-10 at Pac-12 North hopeful Stanford in the season opener. But the Aztecs have been disappointing even in victory, with each of their past five wins coming by a single score. Their only double-digit win came against FCS Sacramento State, and they only beat the Big Sky’s cellar dweller 28-14.
The Aztecs looked disappointing again in their game against winless San Jose State in Week 8, beating the Spartans by only a field goal at home to close out Saturday night action. With the 16-13 survival, San Diego State missed their chance to vault back up into the AP Top 25 due to the narrow victory.
Chance Bell and Chase Jasmin have stepped up at running back in the absence of injured starter Juwan Washington. Bell led the way against San Jose State with 81 yards on 15 carries, while Jasmin racked up 79 yards and a touchdown on 19 touches. The Aztecs needed every yard, as quarterback Ryan Agnew was held in check to finish with only 86 yards on 7-of-11 passing.
At the moment, the Aztecs are once again locked in a head-to-head battle for MWC West supremacy against Fresno State. Rocky Long‘s squad takes to the road in Week 9 to face a Nevada team that toppled Hawaii out of the division race last weekend on the island.
