South Florida remains one of just two unbeaten teams in the Group of Five, but they also remain at No. 5 in this week’s rankings after another mediocre performance against an inferior opponent. UConn went on the road and gave the Bulls fits in a 38-30 win for the hosts. It was the fourth time in the past five victories that South Florida won by a single score.

At this point, with Temple still unbeaten in the division and Cincinnati playing at a high level as well, it isn’t unfair to ask whether USF will finish the season as the fourth-best team in the AAC East standings. Despite their perfect record to date, there are major question marks in Tampa.

The Bulls have neither a dominant offense nor a dominant defense. Their front seven is one the 10 worst in the country at stopping the run. South Florida is among the least disciplined teams in the country, ranking outside the top 100 in the FBS in both flags and yards conceded.

For now the Bulls are ranked in both the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll. A big showdown against 6-1 Houston on the road in Week 9 will help determine which team lands in the first set of College Football Playoff selection committee Top 25 rankings this season.
