2. Navy fails to complete a pass

Commitment to the run, stingy defense, and controlling the clock have been Niumatalolo’s three main staples during his time with Navy. Notre Dame has witnessed the effects of this approach head on, struggling again and again to gain momentum against a team that makes a living out of draining the life from their opponents.

While the success has been lacking, Navy has remained steadfast in their commitment to these principles. The defense has been anything but stingy, but the Midshipmen continue to pound the ground in the run game while limiting their opponents’ offensive opportunities.

Not only has Navy continued to focus on running the football and controlling the clock, they’ve been pretty good at doing so. At this point in the season, Navy ranks third in the nation in rushing yards per game while limiting opponents to only 63.7 offensive plays per game, 16th fewest in the country.

Unfortunately, with success in certain areas often comes sacrifice in others. As a result of their triple option offense, Navy attempts just under 11 passes per game. With the worst pass completion rate in the nation, look for Navy to focus on their strengths in what will be their toughest test of the season.
