Virginia Tech Football: 3 takeaways from disappointing loss to Georgia Tech
1. Virginia Tech might be in trouble going forward
So Virginia Tech did not look particularly great in this game. Ryan Willis was surprisingly efficient against Georgia Tech by completing 15 of his 22 total passes and actually had 201 passing yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. Willis was not the one to blame for this loss today and did his part in trying to help his team win the game.
The problem is the defense. Bud Foster can not get these guys to stop any sort of offense. Old Dominion threw for 495 yards on Foster, they gave up 438 yards to Notre Dame, 522 to a North Carolina team that basically hasn’t decided on a starter at running back or quarterback, and, finally, Georgia Tech put up 465 yards on the ground tonight. What’s concerning about this loss in particular is the fact that Virginia Tech has just come off a bye week.
Bud Foster has proven over the years that he has a great defensive mind and this defense has just not looked good. Either these guys are just not anywhere near as good as I thought they were going to be at the start of the season or Bud Foster simply can’t figure it out this season. Their run defense needs to get better quick however because the rest of their schedule consists of Boston College, Pittsburgh, Miami and Virginia and three of those teams base their entire offense around the run.
The Hokies may have been 4-0 in conference going into this game, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see them go 5-4 in conference by the time the clock strikes zero in Blacksburg, VA on November 23rd.
