2. Kicking may soon be an issue for the Irish

The Irish didn’t know what they were getting when Justin Yoon arrived for the 2015 season. After losing Kyle Brindza following the 2014 season, there was much concern as to what the Irish would get out of their freshman kicker. However, Yoon would be all Kelly could ask for and more as he converted 15 of his 17 field goal attempts on the season.

Yoon’s freshman season would be his most efficient to date, but he has since hovered around a respectable 76% conversion rate midway through his senior year. With sophomore Jonathan Doerer taking over kickoff duties as a result of Yoon’s limited range, Irish fans have already been subjected to the inconsistency of the former.

All will be well should Yoon stay with the Irish beyond his senior year. However, the loss of Yoon will leave Doerer as the only kicker on the roster. While three-star kicker Jay Bramblett has committed for the 2019 season, that leaves only two options for the Irish outside of any prospective transfers.

We’ve already seen Doerer shank an extra point in Yoon’s absence and there’s no way of telling what you’re going to get out of a freshman suiting up in front of 80,000 for the first time in his young career. While we can sit back and enjoy Yoon’s success for now, the Irish will soon have to find a way to replace their all-time leading scorer.
