Texas losing to an unranked foe is not in any way new. That’s been Tom Herman‘s thing for each of his first two season in Austin, and just about everybody saw this coming from a mile away. It’s still disappointing, however, to see Texas continue to only show up for their biggest games. They looked unprepared this weekend, and they got beat. Simple as that. Their rapid comeback attempt was close, but not enough, and because of that, they drop out of the top spot.

The Longhorns have a chance to win that spot back this weekend against West Virginia. Because that’s a big game against a ranked team, I’m sure the good version of Texas will show up, knocking another team out of the playoff race in the process.

Welcome back to the top spot, Oklahoma! The Sooners really didn’t do much to work back up into the number one spot in my rankings, because after losing to Texas, they’ve just taken care of business against TCU and Kansas State, two bad teams.

I think this weekend’s game against Texas Tech will tell us a little bit about this team (especially if the Sooners lose), as will the Oklahoma State game in a couple of weeks, but the last test for the Sooners is pretty obviously the West Virginia game at the end of the year. I think they’ll probably remain here until then.
