The Iowa Hawkeyes under Kirk Ferentz have been one of the most consistent teams in the past decade. They’ll roll out to eight to 10 wins, make a respectable bowl game, and finish somewhere in the middle of the pack in the Big Ten. There are odd years when they challenge for a top spot and years when they stumble to only a few wins.

2018, at least so far, appears to be par for the course for Iowa. They’re going to be a solid program, but are they better today than Texas, Mississippi State, Texas A&M or even Boston College? That’s a hard position for the committee to justify.

This is a team that has had two chances to prove they’ve bucked their status quo and elevated themselves into the conversation of being a top 20 team. They lost to Wisconsin 28-17 and lost to Penn State 30-24. In a world that’s all about what have you done for me lately, Iowa simply doesn’t have enough proof they belong.

The Hawkeyes finish the season against Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois and Nebraska. Those first two squads have both proven to be dangerous and who knows what Scott Frost’s team will be playing like in late November. Iowa could pick up a few impressive wins, but right now they haven’t done much of anything.
