Maryland Football: Top 5 candidates for Terps’ new head coach
2. Mike Locksley
Mike Locksley almost makes too much sense to not be the number one pick, right? However, Locksley has a terrible career record as a head football coach dating back to an interim post for the Terps where he finished 1-5. At New Mexico, Locksley’s Aggies finished a measly 3-31 and it’s pretty clear why the head coaching itch has taken its time to resurface. Yet there are obvious reasons to hire Coach Locksley to guide the Terps back to bowl game status.
Locksley currently makes $1.2 Million as offensive coordinator of a top-5 scoring machine in the nation at Alabama. The Crimson Tide are the S&P+’s 2nd overall offense, while also being second overall in yards per play and first in points per play. Last year the Crimson Tide offense was ranked 23rd per the S&P+ which shows how much growth they’ve had even after replacing some big names at the skill positions.
Locksley is from D.C., played his collegiate football at Towson in Maryland, and has coached at Maryland many times including the previously mentioned interim period. It’s safe to assume that he’s learned a few things about being a head football coach over the past few seasons working for Nick Saban.
