4. Trick plays will keep coming

If you’ve followed Iowa football since Kirk Ferentz came back to Iowa City, you know that he has never been huge into deception. He wants to line his guys up against yours and beat you physically and mentally. That’s what makes the trick plays of the last two seasons even more unbelievable. This past Saturday, Iowa ran a fake field goal where punter/holder Colton Rastteter lobbed a touchdown pass to defensive tackle Sam Brincks. Brincks did play some tight end in his days at Carroll Keumper High School in Carroll, Iowa.

In Ferentz’s weekly press conference on Tuesday, he answered questions on his willingness to run more trick plays as of recent.

"Yeah, that’s the danger zone, but that’s like a lot of plays. When they work, they’re great. If they’re timed out properly — you know, the Ohio State game we just felt like we needed that to really jump ahead. But yeah, I’m definitely more open to them now in the last four or five years than I was say 15 years ago for sure. They have advantages, but the key is still execution like anything, offense or defense, same deal."

Kirk’s comments tell me to definitely expect more trick plays here as we get towards the end of the season. It’s always risky to run them, but as he said, it all comes to down to execution, just like offense and just like defense.
