4. Dexter Williams averages 25 rushing attempts per game

After averaging 9.2 yards on 39 carries last season, Dexter Williams is displaying that same kind of explosiveness as a starter in 2018. Despite sitting out for the first four games of the season, Williams didn’t miss a beat, taking his first carry for a 45-yard touchdown.

Williams has been a dynamic addition to an already explosive offense under quarterback Ian Book, averaging 6.8 yards on 74 attempts for 512 yards. Sophomore Jafar Armstrong has served as the team’s change of pace back while junior Tony Jones Jr. remains little more than an afterthought in the midst of Williams’ return.

The most impressive aspect of Williams’ 2018 season has been his stamina and durability. After logging under 40 rushes in three straight seasons, Williams recorded 21 carries in his first game back from suspension. Granted he has only played in four games this season, questions pertaining to Williams’ ability to serve as a three-down back are slowly being answered.

With Williams having only played half of the season so far, Kelly may be less inclined to limit his carries on the basis of keeping him fresh. Should this be the case, Williams’ efficiency with the football could lead to him earning around 25 rushes per game. Book has been great so far, but Williams’ carries could go up if Kelly decides to rely on the ground game more frequently.
