The skinny

The New Year’s Six remains unchanged this week despite some disappointing performances from both Kentucky and LSU. The Wildcats and Tigers are still in strong position to make the New Year’s Six. It would take upsets for either to not finish 10-2, and they would easily get the bids with 10 wins.

After a frustrating performance in a 36-16 loss in Baton Rouge a few weeks ago, a lot of people were ready to write Georgia off. Since then, the Bulldogs have reasserted their SEC East dominance with comfortable wins over both Florida and Kentucky to clinch their second consecutive berth in the SEC Championship game.

Ohio State’s boat continues to take on water, but the Buckeyes still feel like a near lock to at least make it to the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes probably control their own playoff destiny as well, but they’ve looked like anything but a playoff team for several weeks now. Ohio State labored through a 36-31 home win over Nebraska this week. If they can survive road games at Michigan State and Maryland over the next couple of weeks, they’ll welcome in Michigan to Columbus for a spot in the Big 10 Championship, and potentially the playoff.

LSU talked a big game all week, but the Tigers didn’t match up with Alabama. The Tigers were throttled, managing less than 200-yards of offense and getting shutout by the Crimson Tide for the second straight time in Death Valley. LSU’s SEC Championship and playoff hopes are now dead, but the Tigers are still in good position to make it to the New Year’s Six.
