The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were able to join the ACC for every sport but football. That was likely due to the numerous historic rivalries that Notre Dame wanted to keep playing in each year.

The reason for the placement of a usually successful blue blood program now on this list is the fact that a national title has eluded the Irish for a pretty long time. Falling short in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game in a romping against head coach Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide didn’t help the impatience in this fan base.

Notre Dame is on a good track this fall to reach a College Football Playoff for the first time in program history, but a November collapse could also be around the corner. Last year, Notre Dame was in prime position to reach the Playoff, but that last month of the regular season was a huge letdown. It salvaged the season with a Citrus Bowl win over the LSU Tigers.

But, Notre Dame had a tough time getting things on track at first after the turn of the century with some four win seasons. Current head coach Brian Kelly is establishing a good standard of success in South Bend, IN, but he still has some work to do. Notre Dame football fans expect national titles at least once every decade and he has yet to deliver on that.
